Monday's Question 11-17-08

The Question is...Why are CHILDREN forced to work in factories at such young ages?

  1. I think poor families think it is sort of like free labor, the earlier they put their kids to work, the earlier they will be getting more money, even if they are in harmful conditions.

  2. I agree with Geneva, poor families probably force their children to work in factories at the early ages. It seems really cruel, and it is, but would the young children rather be kicked out on the street and be living by themselves? And if they were kicked out anytime in the winter in a colder climate, it would be torture! But forcing the kids into the kind of labor like this is really horrible.

  3. Though it is sad, some very poor families put their kids to work so they can feed themselves. Imagine if you had a family of,say, five and your job only paid you enough per week to hardly feed one person, yikes! This reminds me of the book I am reading, you might have seen called "Life As We Knew it" where an international crisis left a family to fend for themeselves and the Mother had to stop eating so her kids could eat.

  4. I think that they are put there agianst there will. They are forsed into that possibly because of younger people will have more energy than an older person.? I don't really know but that is my best guess.

  5. I agree with what Geneva said. the sooner their kids are sent to work the sooner they start getting the money. It's so cruel that it happens and I can't imagine how someone could do that.

  6. I think it depends on the government in some cases. Some governments have stronger laws then others on children being forced to work in factories. I also agree that it does have a lot to do with how poor the family is because sometimes a family will have to do anything to stay afloat. To some people money also matters a lot to them than doing what is morally right so they feel as if its fine to force children to work in their factories if its making them money, which is TOTALLY wrong!

  7. It because the "employers" are cruel! modern-day slavery is a serious issue, i personally don't understand how people could force anyone-especially children- to work under such horrible conditions. I think a bigger concern should be how to help them, not why they must suffer.
